Ultra-affordable pocket-money Kontakt instruments

Description

“Ultra-affordable pocket-money Kontakt instruments utilising samples from a range of classic and vintage hardware synths in a very straightforward common interface… the Grit Filter sounds fabulous.

The ‘intelligent’ controls cross-reference each other to operate a range of behind-the-scenes settings aimed at optimising the character of the sounds. There’s also a similarly intelligent ‘randomise’ button onboard.

At this price all the NanoMods are well worth your attention”Computer Music 9 out of 10 – Computer Music magazine

“The potential of these NanoMods is amazing” – Harvey Jones, NYC producer and composer

Rich Pads takes naturally rich analogue waveforms and stacks them up for a seriously beefy, warm sound. Like all NanoMod synth units, it’s based on two blendable custom waves.

Wave 1 is a smooth, lush triangle-based pad sound, thickened by gently detuning multiple oscillators. Being triangle-based, it’s harmonically easy on the ear, ideal for woodwind-type pads and for filling the background of a mix without pushing itself forward.

Wave 2 is a massive sawtooth sound, generated from two oscillators being mixed and then pushed through the SuperSawtor for a  “supersaw” style edge. It’s ideal for string-type pads or Roland-inspired blankets of sound, and has plenty of harmonics for the filters to bite into.

Blending between these two source sounds gets you everything from the kind of subtle pad that you only miss when you mute it out of the mix, through rich, chorussy strings, to full-on overheated synthscapes!

(All our Kontakt instruments require a full copy of Native Instruments Kontakt v4.2.3 or higher (including all versions of Kontakt 5). Kontakt Player is not supported: instruments will load, but will time out after 15 minutes. See the FAQ for further information.)

My hope is to work my way through the catalog methodically, watching for a few things. The richness of sound coming from RR’s pad instruments is enchanting to me, and it seemed like the best place to start was with the simplest example in NM1 Rich Pads.

In the presence of the almighty glitch (rnd) button, massive numbers of presets are not necessary. A few hits start to show you the range. The tone is slightly airy, but I suspect deeper padlike sounds are actually to be found in the NM5 Analog Bass. A good number of dial settings yield stretchy and wispy pads that take awhile to come on and to fade, which is very nice. This instrument could excel at adding textural layers that seem like parallel universe counterpoints to some of the meatier pads out there.

I experimented with mapping the mod wheel to the GRIT FILTER, which works, though GRIT is stepped as it changes. And that actually sounds pretty cool in performance. Then, by accident, while trying (and failing for some reason?) to map the bend wheel to SMOOTH FILTER, it actually ended up mapping BOTH to the mod wheel. They turn at the same time, and the effect is pretty neat! Certainly unique.

A surprisingly wide array of sounds to be produced from this little beauty. From duck quacks, via smooth keys and leads to beautiful pads. The random button almost always delivers a sound ready for saving as a preset.
No biggie, but: Since I like to save sounds as snapshots instead of nki’s, I’d like to have a volume control on the GUI, so I could save the presets’ volume too.

This was on sale and free after reviewing. Duh?

You want a cool pad, but you don’t want to wade through sub-menus only to wind up with a pad that’s got crickets and somebody intermittently banging a bamboo stick throughout? This is it, Atmosphere. More flex than you think. Some cool percussive stuff. when you shorten the envelope.

Super easy, super cheap, super pads!

Wow, This is an insane deal for the pittance they are asking. You don’t have to know the first thing about programming (I sure don’t) and the glitch button will take you on a trip through the cosmos. Instant 80’s Sci-Fi movie score lushness.
